In 1997, eBay recruited Meg Whitman to become the
company’s CEO. Whitman had worked at Disney and
Hasbro, but was not an Internet junkie. She had degrees
from Princeton and Harvard and brought with her a
marketing background built on a commitment to customer
satisfaction. When Whitman took over, the company had
only $49 million in merchandise sales. She helped the
company go public in 1998.
